This workshop will survey of the current state of climate psychology, highlighting psychodynamic theories and unconscious processes relevant to human-caused climate change and, in particular, to the ethical dilemmas in addressing it. Lecture, demonstration groups, discussion and small group process will provide a balanced didactic and experiential encounter, relevant to group and individual psychotherapeutic work, with this deeply important topic.

  1. Describe the current state of climate psychology,
  2. Summarize the psychological and emotional processes relevant to climate change,
  3. Identify unconscious processes that are relevant to human-caused climate change,
  4. Describe intersections between climate change, ethics and other social justice and professional ethics issues,
  5. Articulate their own emotional contribution to the issue of climate change,
  6. Identify ethical ways to improve the efficacy of climate engagement through the use of group interventions and processes.

About our Presenter

Benjamin White, LCSW, CGP 

Ben is a psychotherapist based in Colorado, with clinical licenses and virtual practices also in Massachusetts, Vermont, Washington, Montana and New Hampshire. His 2015 paper in the journal Ecopsychology (“States of Emergency: Trauma and Climate Change,” (abstract at https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/eco.2015.0024) has been a foundation for the continued study of the role of trauma in addressing climate change and informs his regular training groups and presentations on the subject. He is a native of New York, an Outward Bound graduate, a former naturalist and a current Nordic ski instructor. He is a member of the Climate Psychology Alliance North America, NASW, AGPA, and the Four Corners Group Psychotherapy Association. Ben lives in Boulder County, Colorado with his wife, infant son and two dogs, all of whom spend a lot of time outdoors together.

Continuing Education Credit

Wake AHEC will certify Contact Hours and CEUs for a $30 fee as follows, paid when you register. For Ethics credits; Wake AHEC stated "Participants will receive certificates noting the general Contact Hours and CEUs- we aren’t doing specialty credits so we won’t be noting any Ethics specific credit hours.  Most of the boards will accept the agenda noting the ethics topics (usually in the title) with the certificate." :

Wake AHEC will provide 12.0 Contact Hours to participants.
A participant must attend 100% of the program to receive credit. Partial credit will not be awarded.

National Board Certified Counselors Credit (NBCC):

An application for co-sponsorship has been made to the National Board for Certified Counselors. Approval is pending.

CEU Certificate

Wake AHEC will provide 1.2 CEU to participants upon completion of this activity.
A participant must attend 100% of the program to receive credit. Partial credit will not be awarded.

If you select the $30 add on for a Certificate for Continuing Education Contact Hours or CEUs, you will receive an email with a link to register with Wake AHEC (at no additional cost) for the Certificate.
