Description

The voice of the body is often subtle, unspoken, and particular to each individual. Most modalities in psychotherapy prioritize mental activity, inviting clients to put their thoughts and feelings into words rather than looking inside in order to develop secure connections, from sensation to relation. By virtue of implicit memory, our bodies hold our original manner, a cultural imprint or familiar way, from which we perceive, discern, and communicate. Our bodies signal sensations, affects, images, movements, and felt-senses; all processes that authenticate the way we live, give and receive from others. Through didactic and experiential learning, this workshop will advocate for somatic awareness, tracking, resonance, and utilization of physiological feedback to support regulated, congruent, grounded, and fully embodied interactions in group life.

Carlos Canales, Psy.D., CGP, SEP™, AGPA Fellow

Dr. Carlos Canales, Psy.D. is a bilingual/bicultural licensed Clinical Psychologist in full-time private practice in West Des Moines, Iowa. He is a Certified Group Psychotherapist, an American Group Psychotherapy Association-Fellow, and a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner. Dr. Canales specializes in working with affect, the body, and relational dynamics. He has worked in multiple university counseling centers, hospitals, and community mental health centers. In 2011, he opened his private practice and in 2019 he founded Vida Psychotherapy, an outpatient group practice.

Dr. Canales has been involved in group work for over two decades. Currently, he serves as adjunct faculty for the Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society (EGPS), Adelphi University in New York, and the Berkeley Psychotherapy Institute. He facilitates three adult process groups for clients, five training groups, and two
supervision/case consultation groups in person.

He is a clinical member of the Iowa Psychological Association, Iowa Mental Health Counselors Association, The Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology – Division 39, The Society of Group Psychology and Group Psychotherapy – Division 49 of the American Psychological Association (APA), and the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA). In 2022, the Division 49 of the APA recognized him with the “Excellence in Group Practice” award for his outstanding contributions to the practice of group psychotherapy and applied group interventions. In 2024, Dr. Canales received a Lifetime Membership award from the Iowa Mental Health Counselors Association for his commitment to training supervision in psychotherapy. Dr. Canales has served on the board for the Northern California Group Psychotherapy Society (NCGPS), the Iowa Hispanic Educational Resources (HER), and the Iowa Psychological Foundation (IPF). Since 2021, he serves as co-chair of the Fellowship Committee at AGPA.

Continuing Education Credit

Earn 6 hours of Continuing Education credit, accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), through our National organization, the American Group Psychotherapy Association.

The American Group Psychotherapy Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

Practice Somatic Experiencing principles and techniques.
Describe 2 somatic experiences of felt security, as an attachment precursor.
Experience and articulate moments of physiological change (interoception, proprioception) around moments of intrapsychic and interpersonal movement (neuroception).
Assess aliveness, connection, disconnection, and collapse in experience somatically.
Evaluate and apply Somatic Experiencing concepts such as orienting, pendulation, titration, SIBAM, settling, and various forms of freeze responses.
Assess moments of potential unconscious bias relate to issues of racial, identity, or cultural diversity applying somatic principles.
Practice attunement to breath as the portal to nervous system regulation.
