Jeff Georgi M.Div., MAH, LCAS, LPC, CGP

Jeff Georgi is a Consulting Associate in the Department of Psychiatry and the Division on Addiction Research and Translation at Duke University Medical Center. He maintains a private practice in Durham working with patients and families who struggle with substance use disorders.

Over the last seven years, Jeff and his wife, Becky, collaborated with the South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Services, to provide a staff development program through training and consultation for their addiction treatment professionals increasing group skills while expanding the understanding of addictive disease.

Program Description:

This workshop will focus on the treatment of moderate to severe substance use disorders moderate to severe substance use disorders and the recommended modification clinicians should make in their group practice to more effectively and safely treat individuals struggling with addiction.

Utilizing Modified Interpersonal Group Psychotherapy (MIGP), this workshop will provide an experiential base for the advancement of group skills, and detail techniques and interventions specific to the patients with (SUDS). This workshop will also examine the importance of integrating MIGP with the community supports that many patients find in organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Women for Sobriety.

A review of the Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual-Experiential definition of addictive disease will give further focus to the workshop and provides the theoretical underpinning supporting MIGP. Attention will be given to the importance of pharmacological interventions particularly for patients with moderate to severe alcohol or opioid use disorders in collaboration with the support they receive from their group treatment experience.

Objectives:

At the end of the workshop participants will be able to do the following:

  1. Participants will examination the modifications needed in group psychotherapy in order to treat individuals with moderate to severe substance use disorders effectively and safely.
  2. Participants will discuss the important utilization of appropriate medications in addition to group psychotherapy for the treatment of moderate to severe substance use disorders.
  3. Participants will review potential pitfalls inherent in group psychotherapy when dealing with patients with moderate to severe substance use disorders.
  4. Participants will discuss the importance of understanding moderate to severe substance use disorders through the lens of biological vulnerability, psychological liability, social isolation and spiritual bankruptcy.
  5. Participants will examine the role of spirituality in the group treatment of patients with moderate to severe substance use disorders.
  6. Participants will review the interplay between MIGP and community-based support groups for patients with moderate to severe substance use disorders.
