‘Courage, Anxiety and the Group Leader’

With David Hawkins, MD, CGP, DFAGPA

May 2 – 3

Friday Center for Continuing Education
100 Friday Center Drive, Chapel Hill, NC

Workshop Theme

Many layers of learning go into the making of a competent group leader. To understand leadership we must understand membership. We must learn about ourselves as we function in a group setting and are affected by the dynamics of a developing group. The process is less like following a set of instructions than it is like exploring a neighborhood until it becomes a familiar place. Instead of learning “how to do it,” we learn how to evaluate the effects of what we do and to make corrective adjustments.

A new feature of this workshop is a set of breakout groups in which participants can elect to explore one of the following topics:

  • Marketing groups
  • Business aspects of running a group
  • Starting psychoeducation and support groups
  • Starting process groups
  • Developing a courageous response to anxiety through supervision and consultation

Methods of the Workshop

We offer a range of formats through which participants can learn and integrate the information and experiences of the workshop. It will feature didactic presentations, small group exercises, experiential groups, demonstration groups, and special interest break-out groups designed for a wide range of new and experienced group therapists and facilitators. The faculty are senior members of CGPS.

Each participant will be assigned to an experiential process group which meets five times during the weekend. The groups are primarily training groups; however, the process groups also offer participants considerable insight into brief group therapy which they can take back into their own clinical practices. Participation in the workshop as a whole is an integral part of the learning process and participants are expected to be present for all group sessions as much as is humanly possible.
